Hello everyone,

This Week

In English, we have been practicing using adjectives, nouns and verbs in our own sentences. We have also read the second and third traction man books.

In Maths, we have continued adding and subtracting for numbers up to 20. This week we have been practicing using tens frames and counters.

We also had a visit from a ‘Magical Toy Workshop’. It was fascinating to learn the story of Teddy Bears being named after Theodore Roosevelt. We also got to explore lots of different toys from the past.

Weekly Round Up

Hello everyone,

This Week

In English, we have continued looking at ‘Traction Man’. We have planned and written the next sections of our Traction Man stories.

In Maths, we have continued adding and subtracting for numbers up to 20. We have used number lines, known facts (if we know 5 + 3 = 8, we know 15 + 3 = 18) and counting on using our fingers to practice this.

In Science, we looked at the properties of different objects. We decided whether they were hard or soft, light or heavy, rough or smooth, opaque or transparent, dull or shiny.

Homework

Please choose an object at home, draw or take a picture of it and describe it’s properties. Describe whether it is ‘hard or soft’, ‘light or heavy’, ‘rough or smooth’, ‘opaque or transparent’, ‘dull or shiny’.

Please also read ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Animal Talent Show’ on Bug Club.

Notice – Silver Birch’s library session won’t take place this week as we have the ‘Magical Toy Museum’ workshop coming in.

Weekly Round Up

Hello everyone,

This Week

In English, we have continued looking at ‘Traction Man’. We have designed our own superheroes, used adjectives to describe them and written about them in our own versions of the ‘Traction Man’ story.

In Maths, we have practiced doubling and halving and investigate odd and even numbers. We have also been using number lines to add and subtract. For example, 18 – 3 = ? and 14 + 2 = ?

In Science, we looked at different types of paper and investigated how they absorb water.

Homework

Please read ‘The Third Whirligig’ and ‘Sunflowers’ on Bug Club.

Weekly Round Up

Hello everyone,

This week we began a new book for English. Traction Man! We love this book as Traction Man goes on lots of exciting missions and saves the day! We also love reading this story, as we have learned some new vocabulary. Please ask us what hoist and defeat means!

Traction Man cover

We have made a class story map and have learnt it off by heart. We look forward to writing it up in our books over the next 2 weeks. We would love to retell the story to you!

Maths has been a great challenge this week and we’ve been able to show off our great mathematical thinking. We’ve ordered numbers on a number line, put numbers from greatest to smallest, and used our knowledge to find the next number in an increasing or decreasing pattern.

In science, we have learnt about new materials; glass, water, rock and brick. We found out that rock and water are natural, and that brick is man made. We identified these materials in a range of objects and then sorted them into the different materials.

Homework

Please could the children complete these questions in their homework books:

Order these numbers from greatest to smallest:

3  19  0  20  9  15  5

What number comes next in the pattern?

10  12  14  16  ?

15  14  13  12  ?

Please practice writing these numbers in your book:

2   3   5  9

Please also read ‘Jay and Sniffer: The Cake Sale Goo’ and ‘Whizz!’ on Bug Club.

Welcome back!

Welcome back for the Spring Term. We hope you all had a relaxing break!

In maths this week, we have started a new unit; numbers to 20. This week we have looked at using our counting on strategy and adding numbers to a blank number line.

In English we have been looking at the poem ‘The Naughty Toy Box’. We really enjoyed learning the poem and performing it with actions.

In science, we sorted different objects into the types of materials they were made from.

This week, we have been reading…

Homework

Can you please draw a picture of your favourite toy and try to label the materials it is made from (ie plastic, wood or metal). Please add a sentence about why the toy is your favourite.

Have a great weekend,

Weekly Round Up

Hello everyone,

This week has been an exciting week; we’ve been on a visit to St Peter’s Church, we have learnt to tell the time to o’clock and half past, and have been writing poems about a sea monster we have created.

Nativity

The Nativity is this Wednesday morning, 18th December at 9:30. This will take place in the Secondary drama hall.

If you haven’t done so already, please bring in costumes (white, grey or black clothes) in a labelled bag.

Homework

We have assigned all of the children in Year 1 the Bug Club book, Snow Monster.
This is a book that we have started in Guided Reading lessons this week, so the children will be familiar with it. This book contains the graphemes that we have been concentrating on, and so allows children the opportunity to practice with their adult at home.

Homework is to access their Bug Club login, and to read the book online and answer the quiz questions.

Bug Club logins have been stuck in homework books.

Their username is their first name and password is ‘apple’. The school code is xq3p. The website is below:

http://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk

If there are any difficulties in accessing Bug Club, please let the Year 1 team know and we can assist.

If anyone has any physical Bug Club books at home, please can these be returned next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Silver Birch Class

Weekly Round Up

Hello everyone,

What we’ve been reading

Today we finished our book The Lonely Beast. We learnt the story off by heart and re-wrote it ourselves in our English books. The story is about a beast who loves to garden, drink tea and eat cake, until one day he feels lonely. He goes in search of friends and has some adventures along the way.

Ask us about the verbs we have learnt while reading this book 🙂

Lonely Beast

Homework

This week we have been learning the different graphemes for the ‘long vowel o’ sounds.

There is:

/oa/ in boat
/oe/ in toe
/ow/ in snow
/o – e/ in bone

We would like the children to collect 10 words with these sounds in. Maybe they can look around the home or on their walk to school for ‘long vowel o’ sounds?

Happy sound hunting!

Have a great weekend,

Silver Birch Class
